As a little girl, Delores Vardinakis always dreamed of having the perfect wedding.

Little did she know, her wish would be granted, not once, but twice. Recently Delores renewed her vows to her husband of over 56 years, John Vardinakis. “I want to marry him all over again” she said.

It has been a difficult year for Dolores. The current resident of Heartland of Oregon was placed on a

ventilator and had a tracheotomy last year. Though she was told by physicians she wasn’t expected to survive, Delores was determined to pull through.

“I was put on a ventilator and everyone thought I was going to die”, Dolores said. “One of the doctors at the hospital said I wasn’t going to make it. That’s when my daughter said yes I was and brought me back to Heartland.”

Dolores began pulmonary rehabilitation at Heartland of Oregon and a year later, has made a full recovery. Her wish was to show her husband, John, how much she loved him and appreciated his support throughout the tough times.

As a part of Heartland of Oregon’s Hearts Desire program, set up to grant a patient’s special wish, Delores’s wish came true.

The staff put plans in motion to make the event a reality. The ceremony was held in the outdoor courtyard and two reception sites were setup – one for family and the other for friends.

The couple even shared a romantic dinner together with soft music. The couple, who said it was a perfect day, thanked everyone involved for making their day so special.

Heartland of Oregon credits Wal-Mart for assisting with the wedding cake; Fr. Mark Herzog from St. Ignatius Parish in Oregon for performing the ceremony: and Jim Bolander of Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home for assisting with seating and set-up.
