It was a roller coaster day for supporters of Lake High School who have been following the voting in the Kohl’s Cares online contest.
Since July 7, supporters of private and public schools across the country have been casting ballots on Facebook with the hope of getting $500,000 for their favorite schools. When the voting ended at midnight Central time Sept. 3. Lake was at the top of the list with 162,500 votes.
But it was no easy ride. Despite big rally buoyed this week by a grassroots effort on Facebook and through local media to spread the word about the contest and drum up support for Lake, the school started the final day of voting near the bottom list of the top 20 finalists.
By mid-morning, Lake had jumped to eighth place and quickly up to fourth. The vote tally continued to climb and when the last ballot was cast, Lake finished at the top of the list.
Winning schools will be contacted to coordinate prize-winning details on or about Sept.7, and to review the terms and conditions for acceptance of the donations, the Kohl's website said.
