The Elmore Historical Society will sponsor its first-ever cake contest in conjunction with the Portage River Festival on Sunday, June 27
Categories include fruit (filled or topped), non-frosted (glazed or sugared), frosted (icing: cream cheese or buttercream – no fondant) or decorated (with frosting, no character cakes).
All cakes and frosting must be made from scratch. No box cakes or canned frosting will be accepted. Cakes must be either 9-inch round or less; square 8 inches or less; or rectangle 9 x 13 or less. Layered cakes must not be over two layers high.
Judges will not accept any cakes that need to be refrigerated, nor any cupcakes, cheesecakes or coffeecakes. Fillings and frostings must not be custard, whipped or marshmallow.
Cakes must not be left in pans and platforms will not be returned. Age groups are 8-16 and adults 17 and up. Entries must be accompanied by two 3x5 cards, one with name and address and phone number and a second card featuring a listing of cake and frosting ingredients. Prizes will be awarded from both age groups.
Cakes will be judged on appearance and taste. Cakes should be brought to the Weis Building located next to the Post Office between 9 and 10 a.m. Judging will be held at 11am.
After the judging, cakes will be sold by the slice at the Historical barn. Proceeds will go toward next year’s contest.
