Members of the Owens Community College Express women’s softball team are providing a helping hand to Food for Thought during this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Twenty student-athletes and coaches are volunteering their time painting the waiting room, assembling survival backpacks for the homeless and stocking and sorting food items at the organization’s Food Pantry, which is located in New Harvest Christian Church, 3540 Seaman Rd. in Oregon.

In addition, the volunteers and coaches will be separating non-perishable food and basic hygiene items for eventual delivery to needy families and individuals in Haiti as part the relief efforts.

“Community service is about helping others and Owens’ softball program is proud to lend a hand to the Food For Thought organization,” said Duane Lanham, head coach of the Women’s Softball Program. “There are many families who are struggling with such basic needs as food. Our student-athletes and coaches are honored to play a small role in Food For Thoughts’ efforts to eliminate hunger and to make a positive difference in the lives those who are less fortunate.”

The Express women’s softball completed the 2009 season with a 27-13 overall record and captured its seventh Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (8-0 record) title in the program’s history.

Food For Thought in Oregon was founded with the overall mission of assisting the needy through the organization’s stationary food pantry, mobile food pantry and picnic program. Six days per week, Food For Thought is dedicated to providing community outreach services to thousands of individuals as part of their efforts to increase access to food for hungry people.
