To celebrate that ongoing partnership between the Toledo Zoo and the people of Lucas County, the zoo will offer free admission for all county residents the weekends of Jan. 16-18 and Feb. 13-15.
In addition to a slate of activities planned for those weekends, visitors will also receive discount coupons for future visits to the zoo.
The weekends are three-day weekends for many people, and the zoo hopes that families will see all that the zoo has to offer even in the colder months. They take place during the season the zoo has dubbed "Frozentoesen" - a celebration of all things winter that includes ice-carving demonstrations, Cabin Fever Feeding Demonstrations, and special performances and activities. On the appreciation weekend in January, the zoo will present the NASA Challenger Learning Center and puppeteer Joyce Davis.
During the appreciation weekend in February, the Toledo School for the Arts will present Chocolate Soup, an upbeat musical about tweens considering changes in the world including the issues of climate change and the plight of polar bears. On Saturday, Feb. 13, the zoo will celebrate Vanimal-tine’s Day as animals receive species-appropriate treat throughout the day.
A complete schedule of performances and activities can be found at www.toledozoo.org. Frozentoesen is presented by Mercy Children’s Hospital. Lucas County residents must present ID showing proof of residency.
The Toledo Zoo, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo.
