A cosmopolitan mix of Spanish and Latin American guitar sounds that spans the eras from contemporary to jazz,
swing and be-bop will fill the air at Owens Community College’s Center for Fine and Performing Arts as internationally acclaimed Spanish guitarist Francesc de Paula Soler takes the stage Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre.

Presented by the Department of Communications, Humanities and Languages and the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Owens, Soler’s free recital will be held in conjunction with the college’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Admission to the event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Known as “The Poet of the Guitar,” Maestro Soler is internationally recognized for his masterful guitar performances.  Critics have lauded him as one of the most notable names in the guitar world. Maestro Soler began to study the guitar at a young age and received the highest honors for his talents from the prestigious Conservatorio Superior de Música in Barcelona, Spain. He continued his postgraduate work with Andrés Segovia and also received guitar orientations from Narciso Yepes.

Prior to his Friday performance, Maestro Soler will share insight into his musical background as part of a free guitar master class workshop and demonstration Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. Later that same day, the international artist will provide a free music-supported lecture in Spanish titled “Literatura y Música Hispana a Través de la Historia” at 7 p.m. Both events will take place in the Mainstage Theatre and are open to the public.

For more information, call 567-661-7835 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, ext. 7835.
