The Toledo Zoo’s Senior Discovery Days are a great way for folks 60 and over to reconnect with their Toledo Zoo.

With free admission and activities for seniors each Tuesday, plus free coffee and a mini-muffin each weekday in the Timberline Bakery, there’s never been a better time for seniors to go a little wild at the zoo.

Each Tuesday during Senior Discovery Days, the Zoo offers free admission for people 60 and over. There are also live performances, guided tours and classic movies planned for Tuesdays. The schedule for Tuesdays in October is as follows:

On Oct. 6, The zoo presents the movie Africa Screams, starring Abbott and Costello. The 1949 comedy begins at 10:30 a.m. in the zoo’s Indoor Theatre, located in the Museum of Science.

The big band sounds of Jeff McDonald’s Big Band Revival Orchestra can be heard Oct. 13 in the Nairobi Pavilion. They’ll perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and light refreshments will be served.

The zoo’s award-winning Aviary will be in the spotlight Oct. 20 with a special guided tour at 11 a.m. Dedicated in 1937, the Aviary received an impressive renovation in 1998. Its three walkthrough habitats—the African Grasslands, Sonoran Desert and Australian Outback—are an experience all their own.

On Oct. 27, listen for the Bowsher High School Rebelaires as they roam the zoo from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. In addition, there will be a guided tour of the WPA-era Reptile House at 11 a.m. To reserve a spot on either guided tour, call 419-385-5721, ext. 2110.

In addition to all of these activities, seniors also receive a 10 percent discount on Grandparents Memberships and special discounts at Toledo Zoo gift shops. MedCorp will also offer free health screenings in the Arctic Encounter from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Toledo Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo. For more information, visit www.toledozoo.org or call 419- 385-4040.

Lucas County residents are admitted free of charge each Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. ID showing proof of residency is required.
