The Lucas County Arena will open in style Oct. 3 and 4 from noon to 4 p.m. with free events open to the public.
The opening will highlight the versatility and quality of the entertainment and sporting attractions that the arena will bring to downtown Toledo. Fans will be able to enjoy live bands, their picture in the Walleye locker room and get into the action with a hockey skill contest.
On Sunday, fans will have the opportunity to watch the Toledo Walleye’s training camp, live on the ice in the new arena.
The event will kickoff with a stakeholder ribbon cutting at noon on Saturday.
“I am excited and proud to have the citizens of Lucas County experience their new arena for the first time. This project has been more than three years of hard work, vision, and collaboration, and I know our community will treasure their experiences in this building for years to come,” said Commissioner Pete Gerken.
“The arena will be an exciting destination for sports and entertainment, for young and old alike,” said Commissioner Tina Skeldon-Wozniak. “But even more importantly, as we take advantage of the green jobs of the future, the Arena will be the kind of ‘green’ icon that truly puts Lucas County on the map.”
“I’ve always said the Lucas County Arena truly belongs to the people. It will be a place where families and friends can take in not only hockey, but so many other kinds of events as well. That’s why this event is a perfect way to open the building. It’s free and it’s a chance for everyone to enjoy an awesome venue,” said Commissioner Ben Konop.
The Lucas County Arena is a 267,000 square foot facility built by more than 1,500 local workers, investing more than 500,000 labor hours in the project. In total, the project represented a $20M payroll investment in the local economy.
More than 1,400 tons of structural steel went into the structure, along with more than 17,000 cubic yards of concrete.
It will seat between 8,000 and 8,500 people, based on what type of event it is set up for. There are 24 suites, and one restroom for every 150 fans (nine men, 10 women and two family restrooms.) It has been completed below budget and ahead of schedule, and is expected to be the nation’s first LEED-certified arena.
