As much fun as they are to observe in their natural habitats, the Toledo Zoo’s animals are even more fun to watch when they’re eating. The Big Feed, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, offers a great chance to see some of your favorite zoo animals chow down, with feeding and enrichment demonstrations taking place all day throughout the Zoo.
Visitors will see some of their favorite animals, from tigers and orangutans to vultures and crocodiles, as they enjoy species-appropriate treats. They’ll also learn about the many ways that the zoo provides enrichment for animals, stimulating their senses and giving them opportunities to make choices as their natural behaviors are encouraged. It’s great for the animals, and it’s a lot of fun to watch, too.
A complete schedule of feedings and demos can be found at the Zoo’s Web site, www.toledozoo.org.
For folks who want to get even closer to the feeding action, there are paid feeding opportunities that offer the chance to feed some of the animals, including ducks, goats and seals. There’s also an opportunity to help set up enrichment in the elephant habitat and get a first-hand look at the elephants’ daily bath.
Visit www.toledozoo.org to see which pay-to-feed opportunities are still available, and then call 419-385-5721, ext. 3092 to reserve a place.
The Toledo Zoo, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo. Lucas County residents are admitted free of charge each Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. ID showing proof of residency is required.
