More than 200 people gathered at Terra Community College today Sept. 14 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the college’s new Skilled Trades Center.

Terra President Marsha S. Bordner, Ph.D., welcomed the visitors and Helene Zielinski, chairperson of the board of trustees, presented a short historical perspective of Terra.

Featured speakers included Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce and Bill Russell, associate vice chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.

The Skilled Trades Center will be approximately 23,225 square feet at a total cost of about $3.5 million. Funding for the project is a combination of state and local funds. The building will house state-of-the-art labs including HVAC, welding, power technologies and truck driving.

This is the first new building on the Terra campus since the Early Learning Center opened in 1997.

Construction is expected to last a year. The building vacated by these labs will then be renovated into an allied health wing and a music wing.
