In late October the Pemberville Opera House will present “The Mikado” to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the opera house. Auditions for the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera will be held Aug. 13 and 14 from 7 to 9 p.m.
This will be the second time “The Mikado” will grace the opera house stage. The first time was in May 1899, just a month after the installation of electricity. Twenty-three local citizens were in the production.
The Mikado is the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and arguably the most popular opera ever written. With a hilarious plot involving the law and love in Japan, the opera has delighted auiences for more than a century and spawned a number of imitations.
Dr. F. Eugene Dybdahl, retired director of the BGSU Opera and Summer Musical Theater, will be the stage and musical director of the October production of “The Mikado.” He has performed as vocal soloist with many opera groups, symphonies, and choral societies throughout the country and Canada. Dybdahl has a wide variety of repertoire and has served as stage director and musical director for over 100 opera and musical productions.
A pianist will be provided and those auditioning are asked to bring sheet music and be prepared to read. There are several roles for both men and women of all ages. Open to all ages high school and older.
