From a project’s inception, architects and designers focus on the outcome of their work - the high performance of a building, the sustainable interior design, the high efficiency mechanical system. Often overlooked, however, is the collective impact that thousands of decisions carry during the process of creating a new space or structure.
ZeroLandfill, a grassroots, award-winning seasonal program that originated in Northwest Ohio in 2006, addresses this “ledger of choices” with the intent of creating a low impact, beneficial reuse model for all interior design and structural specification materials and samples.
Since the program’s inception, the ZeroLandfill project team has assisted the architectural and interior design community in identifying, diverting from local landfills, and re-purposing back into the community thousands of pounds of specification samples that hold value for other audiences such as artists and arts educators. A total of 150,543 pounds of samples have been diverted from landfills since the project’s inception in cities such as Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Boston. Columbus, Louisville and Minneapolis launching projects in 2009. This year, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) of Toledo has partnered with ZeroLandfill for the first ZeroLandfill project in Northwest Ohio. ZeroLandfill Toledo will be held at 1301 Adams St., Toledo from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays from April 24 to May 15. Throughout the program dates, architects and interior designers will drop off old samples such as tile, brick, carpet, fabrics, and wall coverings that area artists and teachers can then take, free of charge, for use as studio supplies or for art projects.
