Why, oh why Ohio? That’s the question being asked by the Clay High School Limelighters in their upcoming spring musical, “Wonderful Town.” The musical follows the story of sisters Ruth and Eileen Sherwood, who travel to New York City from Columbus in search of love and fortune. The musical was written by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov, with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and music by Leonard Bernstein. It is based on Fields and Chodorov’s 1940 play “My Sister Eileen,” which is based on the collection of short stories by Ruth McKenney of the same name.
The show features a large cast including senior Limelighters Eddie Greenblat as Frank Lippencott, Bridget Harrington as Ruth, Olivia Vincent as Ms. Valenti and Justin Yard as Chick Clark. Junior cast members include Hannah Yedica as Appopolous, Ryan Hook as Robert Baker, Mike Ankele as Wreck, Sarah Breier as Helen, Rachel Wells as Mrs. Wade and Maggie Kesling as Eileen. The show is also the first musical for this team of directors working together. Director Dave DeChristopher is in his first year at Clay High School. He previously worked in New York City both on and off the stage. Music director Elizabeth Gibson is a music teacher within the Oregon City Schools District and has been with the Clay High School Limelighters for 10 years. Choreographer Carol Mahn is joining DeChristopher as a new member to the production team. Technical director Ann Sommers has been with the Limelighters since her days as a student. She has been given the task of building and designing all of the set pieces. Oregon Schools art teacher Leah Smith is in charge of making and designing all the costumes for the show. Performance dates are March 26, March 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clay High School auditorium. Tickets, which are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, are available by calling Clay High School at 419-693-0665 ext. 2006 or at the box office the nights of the show. A portion of the proceeds from the Thursday night performance will be donated to Kyle Cannon and his family. Cannon, a Clay High School hockey player, was injured during a hockey game.
