Just about everyone has heard the story of “Stump,” who became the oldest dog to win Best-In-Show honors at the Westminster Dog Show. Who wasn’t amazed at the Sussex Spaniel who came out of retirement to win the hearts of the judges and all of America? “If a 10-year-old dog can win Best-In-Show at the Westminster Dog Show, a 10-year-old dog adopted from the Humane Society can also win your heart!” said John Dinon, executive director of The Toledo Area Humane Society.
Senior dogs are often overlooked, but they can become a remarkable part of any family, Dinon noted, adding that they are usually already house broken, are through the chewing stage, have some basic training and have the same capability to provide love and companionship as a puppy. The Toledo Area Humane Society has many older animals that are ready to become a member of your family. An example is Samantha, who is a very youthful 11-year-old black Lab mix. Samantha absolutely loves this winter weather and she would like nothing more than to take a leisurely walk and have the opportunity to roll in the snow, Dinon said. Intelligent and eager to please, this girl is looking for a laid-back home with lots of love. The Humane Society also has a Seniors for Seniors program, which makes it more affordable for seniors to bring a pet into their lives. Adults age 60 and older can adopt any animal age 5 and older at no cost every Wednesday. They can also adopt any animal any day of the week for $50 off the regular adoption fee or $25 off already reduced adoption fees. The Toledo Area Humane Society is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Members of the community are invited to come visit all the deserving animals awaiting adoption at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Arrowhead Park, Maumee.
