The East Toledo Family Center held its Annual Meeting and Recognition Night Jan. 28. At the meeting, the board of trustees welcomed new members. Officers include Erik Wineland, president; Lisa Pavley, vice president, Kim Wineland, secretary; Darrin Arquette, treasurer. Several members of the community were recognized with awards at the event. The Dorie Steinmetz Memorial Community Service Award, given annually to an individual who best exemplifies the volunteerism and community service of Dorie Steinmetz, a former board member, was presented to Eulan Tucker.
Tom Davis and Sue Surgo were received the Service Award, which represents the highest award the Family Center Board of Trustees presents. It is given to agencies or corporations that have helped the center over the past year. Program awards are given to program participants who show outstanding advancement in academics, sportsmanship, character and display leadership in their individual program areas. Recipients included • Kids Kare, Sara Orr and David Rodriques; • Cheerleading, Maranda Urbina; • Strictly Teens, Ryan Amato; • Athletics, Renyssa Davis and Dezarai Fix. The Volunteer Award is presented to individuals who have far exceeded the East Toledo Family Center’s expectations of a volunteer. Recipients included the Zapata Family, Tony, Michelle, Vanessa and Antonio; and John Rider and Shirley Phalen The Staff award, presented for dedicated service and a commitment to quality in the work place, was presented to Kenny Washington, Nichole Hinckley and Desidierio Sifuentes. The Reddish Leadership Award, named after Max Reddish, a life long East Toledo businessman, former Toledo City Councilman, Lucas County Commissioner and a member of the board of trustees of the East Toledo Family Center, was presented to Brittany Dile. Cousino’s Youth of the Year Award. The East Toledo Family Center’s most prestigious award is given to one individual each year that demonstrates the ability to achieve high standards in academic performance, the ability to work with and help others, and the ability to lead and withstand peer pressure. The award was presented to Isiah Segura. Volunteer Scholarship Award The East Toledo Neighborhood House Alumni Association has developed a scholarship fund for East Toledo area youths to assist them in their pursuit of education beyond high school. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria: • Parent or guardian has been a volunteer or staff member of ETFC. • Must be in your senior year of high school/or attending accredited college. • Must have an accumulated grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4-point scale). • Must have been accepted or made an application to an accredited college or university. • Must be willing if selected to provide a total of 20 hours of volunteer time at the center.
This year’s Volunteer Scholarship Award went to Isiah Segura. The Century Award The Century Award was created to commemorate the family center at the East Toledo Neighborhood House’s 100 years of service to the East Toledo Community. The award will be presented several times during this year. It is given on behalf of the East Toledo Family Center’s Board of Trustees and the East Toledo Neighborhood Alumni Association to recognize an individual or group for their contributions in furthering the Family Center in achieving its mission over the last century. This year’s Century Award recipient is Joe Kochancki.
