Warm feet, warm hearts: Local organization featured in PEOPLE magazine
Friday, 06 February 2009 12:19
It all started with a child’s single act of kindness and selflessness, and now the local girl’s compassion for those who are less fortunate is bringing national spotlight to the Toledo area.
Hannah’s Socks, a Perrysburg-based nonprofit focused on providing clothing necessities to the less fortunate, is being featured in the Feb. 9 issue of PEOPLE magazine.
The story, which appears in the magazine’s “Heroes Among Us” section, highlights young Hannah Turner, who inspired Hannah’s Socks.
“As a growing, local nonprofit organization, we are thrilled for the opportunity to tell our story on a national level,” said Doris Turner, Hannah’s mom and co-founder of Hannah’s Socks. “This is an excellent opportunity to spread the news of good things happening in Toledo. We’re looking forward to the positive publicity this will bring for Hannah’s Socks, its mission, and the people we serve.”
The personal community service project turned non-profit organization began some four years ago when then 4-year-old Hannah Turner and her family were serving Thanksgiving dinner at a local homeless shelter. Hannah noticed a man whose shoes had split open, revealing he wasn’t wearing socks. She told her mother she was worried that the man’s feet would get cold.
Although her mother tried to reassure her the man’s shoes would keep his feet warm. Hannah wasn’t convinced.
“Mommy, he can have my socks,” Hannah told her mom, pulling off her sneakers to offer him her pink socks. The next day, Doris took Hannah to purchase and distribute socks to local shelters.
The non-profit organization collects new men’s, women’s and children's socks, as well as undergarments, then forges partnerships with local shelters for distribution to both the homeless and to victims of domestic violence. In addition, it supports programs serving underprivileged children.
Last year alone, Hannah’s Socks collected more than 47,000 pairs of socks.
