The new Brown Welcome Center at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is all decked out with beautiful holiday decorations, thanks to the generosity of Kate and Ben Rice of Pills N’ Packages. Additional decorations were provided by Bench’s Christmas Shoppe.
In addition to the beautiful holiday decorations, 22 paintings by Tamara Monk and Thomas Hilt and three outstanding sculptures by Baltimore sculptor Barry Woods Johnston are also decking the halls of the new Brown Welcome Center.
Tamara Monk is a well-known artist/teacher whose recent exhibits include the 67th Mid-Year Show at the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown; 75th Spring Show at the Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pa.; Space 301, Centre For The Living Arts, Mobile, Ala; and the Annual Toledo Area Artist Exhibitions. She was commissioned by The Medical University of Toledo to paint four portraits. Two of her paintings were purchased by Bowling Green State University and are part of the university permanent collection.
Thomas Hilty is professor of art emeritus at BGSU and served as director of the School of Art from 1986-94. He currently serves on the board of directors at Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy, a position he has held since 1992. Over the years, Thomas has been invited as a visiting artist to over 15 institutions in the U.S. and Europe. He has exhibited and been on consignment with the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, the J Barrett Galleries in Toledo, the Cable Gallery in San Diego, the J. Rosenthal Gallery in Chicago, the Miller Gallery in Cincinnati and the Robert Kidd Gallery in Birmingham, Mich.
In 2003, he was part of a group exhibit “Salute to Ohio Artists” in celebration of the Ohio Bicentennial at Schedel with David Deming, president of the Cleveland Institute of Art and works from the private estate of Dominick Labino, inventor and contemporary glass artist.
Barry Woods Johnston is a recognized master of the arts. Over the past 30 years, he has produced a body of work that is distinguished by thoughtful conception, virtuosity of technique and stirring emotion. His sculptures have been repeatedly featured at exhibitions of the National Academy of Design, the National Sculpture Society, and the Allied Artists of America.
