Louis Sweitzer is a name still familiar to many longtime residents of Oregon and East Toledo. Hired in 1935 as the first caretaker at Pearson Park, he managed the beloved park for 39 years until his death in 1974 at age 65.
Louis actually began his career at Pearson two years earlier, as a worker for the Civilian Conservation Corps, which developed the park, clearing fields, digging ponds and blazing walking trails. Hired as one of the first employees of the young park district, he was paid $60 per month and allowed to live at the park, first in a garage, then in a rustic log cabin and finally in the caretaker’s house, which is still in use today.
A World War II veteran who served in Africa and Europe, and a Purple Heart recipient, Louis was held in high regard by the community. He was named a Life Member of the East Toledo Club, whose members were instrumental in founding Pearson. Fred and Wanda Rice, of Oregon, who had a family connection to Louis, recently donated a scrapbook belonging to him, along with numerous photos and even his park ranger badge. They will be among items on display at the park next year as Pearson celebrates its 75th anniversary. Metroparks and Friends of Pearson are looking for any photographers or memorabilia from Pearson for the 75th anniversary celebration. Call Scott Carpenter at 419-407-9726 for more information.
