November 17
1895 - Wealthy women complain that not enough girls in Toledo want domestic servant jobs. The girls cite long hours, the "tyranny" of housewives, and wages of $2.50 a week.
1927 - Toledo Police Chief Harry Jennings promises to put the “lid” on illegal gambling in Toledo. He vows that he will stop slot machines and other types of vice.
1933 - Pemberville farmer Leo Briggs shoots and wounds an American bald eagle that has been stealing his pigs. Eagle has a 7- foot wing span.
1956 - East Toledo holds a parade to Navarre Park as part of a fundraiser to move the cabin of Toledo pioneer Peter Navarre to the Toledo Zoo.
November 18
1905 - John Ryan of Buckeye and Erie Streets given 30 days in the workhouse for trying to entice young girls and boys into his basement, and offering whiskey to some.
1922 - Daring bank robbery is pulled off in Genoa at the local downtown bank. A Genoa druggist is shot to death as he crosses the street near the bank. Robbers escape with large amount of cash and securities. Two men are arrested, but later acquitted and released.
1948 -Toledo Police motorcycle officer Albert Fadell killed in cycle crash near downtown.
1975 - Shocking Ottawa Hills murder when two elderly widows (mother and daughter) are beaten to death in their home and robbed. The crime is later solved with the arrest of the woman's son and daughter-in-law who are later convicted along with an accomplice.
November 19
1906 - Toledo Police round up 30 "suspicious" persons after a recent burglary. They not only arrest those they believe committed the crime but also collar others who look like they might commit a crime.
1920 - The Rivoli Theater opens in downtown Toledo on St. Clair Street. Its marquee would stay alive with light until the 1970's.
1926 - Wabash Railroad is offering the “Flamingo” service each day to Florida from Toledo. The train leaves at 7:30am and reaches Jacksonville by 9 the next evening.
1936 - A 19-year-old from Toledo is sentenced to jail for car theft in Lucas County after he was caught stealing a car which he had hoped to sell to bail his mother out of jail who was convicted on a narcotics charge. Now both are behind bars.
November 20
1897 - Workmen building the new railway line near the Perrysburg bridge unearth many Indian relics and skeletons. They have found tomahawks, kettles, bones and five skeletons near the Ft. Meigs site.
1926 - Cigar store dealer in Toledo says women no longer want to smoke just cigarettes but are also buying cigars and pipes.
1934 - Scores of Toledo radio dealers hold the City-Wide Radio Exposition as they unveil their new 1935 models which promise to pull in signals from around the globe.
1954 - White Hut drive-in restaurants advertising for curb waitresses. They offer free meals, top pay, hospitalization, uniforms and paid vacations.
November 21
1907 - Long-distance marathon walker Edward Weston passes through Toledo to cheering crowds on trip from Portland, Maine to Chicago.
1925 - Reports of a "phantom attacker" in Toledo surface again after two women report they are clubbed by a large man with daubs of red paint on his cheeks and his eyes painted black.
1949 - Crime wave continues with robberies of taverns and stores. Revival of the “hoodlum” squad is announced by the Toledo Police Department.
November 22
1928 - Bowling Green Falcons celebrates first undefeated football season.
1930 - Wealthy African-American Toledo businessman and reputed gambler Pearl Barber is killed in head-on collision with a drunk driver in East Toledo.
1956 - Elvis Presley performs for first time in Toledo at Sports Arena. Blade reporter writes that young fans "bordered on hysteria"
1963 - President John F. Kennedy assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Toledo reacts with shock and stunned disbelief. Shoppers in downtown stores listen to radio reports and many are seen crying. Traffic on the streets slows to a crawl under the dark veil of a light cold rain. The Toledo Blade newspaper, which happened to be on strike that week, quickly settles dispute and staff returns to publish full newspaper on Sunday.
1963 - The Michael DiSalle Bridge over Maumee River is to be opened and dedication ceremonies held, but the celebration is called off because of JFK assassination.
November 23
1904 - A Frank Marshall of Toledo is wounded by a turkey farmer in West Toledo when he tries to steal a bird for the Thanksgiving dinner table. He is taken to city jail where he is served turkey for Thanksgiving.
1925 - More than 500 heavily armed police patrol the streets in an all-out effort to capture the deadly "Toledo Clubber" that the papers report has "thrown terror into the hearts of Toledo womanhood."
1955 - Toledo police say a 2-year- old boy riding in his father's car on Stickney Avenue tries to throw a wad of gum out the car window and hits his father in the eye. It causes him to lose control and the car smashes into a light pole. Three people are injured.
