Student stars: Genoa students gain ‘real world’ financial literacy at UT program

On Oct. 3, Genoa High School social studies teacher Jon Sandwisch and his Financial Literacy Classes participated in The University of Toledo's Finances 101.
Finances 101, developed by the Northwest Ohio Credit Union Alliance, presents students with real-world financial scenarios as a means of preparing them for the responsibilities they’ll face in college and beyond. As they built a budget and navigated a life-sized game board that simulates expected expenses like mortgages and income tax as well as surprises like emergency room stints or winning lottery tickets, they learned what it costs to run a household, how earnings impact lifestyle and why it’s important to make sound financial decisions.
Students who attended were eligible to win a $500 scholarship from the University of Toledo, and GHS student Nate Wise was this year's winner.

Students share research
Two local Ohio Wesleyan University students shared the results of their 2024 summer science research projects Sept. 26 during the university's 32nd annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium.
More than 50 OWU students presented information and answered questions about their 10-week mentored research projects during the two-hour symposium. Local residents presenting, their projects, and their mentors included:
        • Brianna Montgomery, of Gibsonburg, participated in a group presentation of “Transformational Education: How Do We Know We are Delivering It?” Montgomery was mentored by Cliff Hurst of the Ohio Wesleyan Department of Economics and Business.
        • Ian Sander, of Pemberville, presented “From Design to Nicotine Delivery: A Comprehensive Characterization of Popularly Used E-Cigarettes.” Sander was mentored by Ahmad El Hellani, Marielle C. Brinkman, and Theodore Wagener of the Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science at The Ohio State University.
The Summer Science Research Symposium was held as part of Ohio Wesleyan's annual fall OWU Connection Conference. The conference enabled students to share how their participation in the university's signature experience - the OWU Connection - is helping them to create the personal and professional futures they seek.
