Popular TMA exhibitions to close Jan. 3 & 17, respectively

Two exhibitions on view at the Toledo Museum of Art will close in January.
        “The Path to Paradise: Judith Schaechter’s Stained-Glass Art,” featuring an artist who turns stained glass on its head by using new techniques and exploring thought-provoking subjects – often with a feminist sensibility – will close on Sunday, Jan. 3.
        “Picture ID: Contemporary African American Works on Paper,” which showcases contemporary African American artists who use a mixture of text and images to tackle cultural stereotypes and challenge oppressive racial characterizations, will close on Sunday, Jan. 17.
        “The Path to Paradise,” on view in TMA’s Levis Gallery, includes more than 40 of Schaechter’s (born 1961) stained-glass panels along, with a selection of related drawings and process materials. The objects are drawn from both private and institutional collections. It is the first retrospective and major scholarly assessment of this groundbreaking artist’s 37-year career.
        “Picture ID: Contemporary African American Works on Paper” is comprised of works drawn from TMA’s permanent collection and features nine artists – Glenn Ligon, Howardena Pindell, Adrian Piper, Martin Puryear, John Rozelle, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems and Fred Wilson. Their works build on earlier artistic developments and cultural debates of the late 1980s and 1990s to consider the meaning and interpretation of individual identity through overlapping perspectives of gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality.
        “The Path to Paradise: Judith Schaechter’s Stained-Glass Art,” organized by the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, opened in Rochester, New York. After Toledo, the show will end its run in Iowa at the Des Moines Art Center. The exhibition is sponsored by 2020 Exhibition Program Sponsors Taylor Auto and ProMedica with additional support from the Ohio Arts Council, the TMA Ambassadors and the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass.
