P. Leon Pfouts “Lee”

P. Leon Pfouts, 87, of Genoa, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 22, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.  Lee was born September 30, 1933 in Byhalia, Ohio to Pearl and Mary (Ramsey) Pfouts.   He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and chemistry from Ohio State University in 1955.  Following college, Lee joined the United States Army.  On November 22, 1958, he married the love of his life, Elsie Schwarzkopf.  Lee was formerly employed with Brush Wellman and retired as Director of Environmental Services with the City of Toledo in 1996.  Mr. Pfouts was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving as church council president and member of the choir.  For over 40 years, he was a member of the Toledo Schwaben Verein serving in many leadership positions.  Lee was known as the “Pretzel Guy” and member of the chicken crew at the German American Festival.  Lee enjoyed cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, camping, spending time outdoors, and began his 2021 vegetable plants three weeks ago.  In retirement years, Lee and Elsie were worldwide travelers.  Lee treasured time spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and has been a devoted caregiver to his wife, Elsie, even as his health declined.
Lee is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elsie; children, Tom Pfouts, Dan Pfouts, Don (Debra) Pfouts, and Sue Sass; 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Ruth Dierker, Ron (Nancy) Pfouts, and Greg (Dianne) Pfouts; along with many loving family members and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob Pfouts and Dick Pfouts; and son-in-law, Nicholas Sass. 
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2021.  Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association of Northwest Ohio.    Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home.
