National finalist

Christa George sits with her giant pumpkins at her Jerusalem Township home. The Clay High School 2020 graduate is a national finalist in her FFA Proficiency Award in AgriScience Research for Plant Systems. For her project, George spent the last four years raising and researching giant pumpkins and fertilizers as well as raising over 900 geraniums and testing lighting effect on them.  “This is a huge accomplishment and we are so proud of her,” said Meredith Wolfe, the Clay agriculture and environmental technologies teacher and FFA advisor. The announcements of national placings will happen at the FFA National Convention in October, although due to the COVID pandemic, it will be virtual. “Clay has not had a national finalist in this area for a long, long time — at least since before I was in high school,” Wolfe said, adding that she will have to dig further to see if Clay ever had a national finalist in proficiency awards. (Press photo by Ken Grosjean)
