Mercy Health earns national physician well-being award
Mercy Health, which is part of Bon Secours Mercy Health, has received the prestigious Medicus Integra© Award, which was conceived and developed by The Coalition for Physician Well-Being.
The award is based upon the belief that physician resilience and well-being is not only good for physicians but is conducive to healthy organizational culture and essential to quality patient care.
“It’s no secret that a healthy and engaged physician workforce often means enhanced patient care, greater efficiency, better working relationships, and improved quality and safety,” said Dianne McCallister, M.D., Coalition board member and president of Diagnosis Well, Inc., Denver, Colorado. “Now health care organizations can better gauge how they are doing in terms of the intentional programming and resources they are providing to help physicians achieve balance in their lives and derive joy in their practice of medicine.”
To qualify, nominating organizations must submit comprehensive documentation identifying and itemizing their efforts and results in four key categories: Resilience, Learning, Business & Quality, and Culture.
“We know that balanced, healthy, fulfilled physicians are more likely to communicate and collaborate effectively with patients and staff, demonstrate care and compassion, and experience better outcomes,” said Ted Hamilton, board chair of the Coalition and chief mission integration officer of AdventHealth. “I believe that if given a choice, most of us would prefer to go to, or work for, a health care organization that prioritizes physician well-being.”
Bon Secours Mercy Health is one of the 20 largest health systems in the United States and the fifth-largest Catholic health system in the country. The ministry’s 60,000 associates serve communities in Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and throughout Ireland.
“We are honored to be recognized by Medicus Integra for our physician well-being programs,” said Herbert Schumm, M.D., vice president, medical director education and physician engagement. “The caregivers across our ministry have performed beautifully over the past two years, but it is not enough to shower them with praise and thanks, which are all well-deserved. At Bon Secours Mercy Health we are deliberate about our approach to recognize their human dignity and therefore their needs for care and support for their well-being."
All Mercy Health physicians have been given access to 24/7/365 confidential counseling and support services at no cost. Locally at Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center, a Brief Emotional Support Team (BEST) was formed to provide peer emotional support after traumatic patient events. Additionally, members of the medical staff are allowed to use the newly refurbished hospital gym free of charge.
The Provider Service Excellence Award program was recently reinstituted to recognize and show appreciation to health care providers for their outstanding contributions.” Given the unprecedented stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever, we need to be intentional about providing resources to help physicians build resilience, achieve work life balance and experience meaning and value in their work,” said Greg Haselhuhn, MD FACS, Immediate Past Chief of Staff for Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center.

Hospice seeking volunteers
Hospice of Northwest Ohio is building its volunteer team in Lucas and Wood, as well as Fulton and Henry counties in Ohio and Monroe County in Michigan. Volunteers have the opportunity to work closely with hospice staff to improve the quality of life for patients and families through a variety of tasks.
The current need is for volunteers who are willing to visit patients in their homes or at nursing homes throughout the area. These volunteers provide companionship for patients and respite for caregivers.
Cathy Helton, a Hospice of Northwest Ohio volunteer since 2014, says, “Many of the ways we help patients and their families may seem like ‘small’ things to us as volunteers, but they become large for those facing the end of life. It is an honor and a privilege to bring joy to patients and their families.
“I signed up to volunteer to bring joy to Hospice patients and found out that it is the patients that bring joy to my life,” she added.
Free training is provided. Learn more about our volunteer program and apply online at hospicenwo.org.
