GPA: Registration open for summer Living History Day Camps

Registration is open for Children’s Living History Day Camps, sponsored by Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society.
The camps are open to children entering third, fourth and fifth grades. Dates include June 4-7, June 11-14 or June 18-21.
Now in its 16th year, this four-day camp experience provides hands-on experience for life in the 1800s. Daily topics include The Civil War, Historic Trades and Crafts, Ohio Heritage and Time Travelers.
“Because it is very popular, we've added two more weeks to camp so that more children can participate,” said Michelle Quilter, OJHS president.

OSS billboard contest
Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca County fifth-grade students participated in the OSS Solid Waste District’s annual Billboard Contest, in hopes of having their designs put up on a billboard in the community.
Billboards are being posted throughout April in celebration of Earth Day.
Students were encouraged to create a design with a recycling or litter prevention theme. The District staff voted for their favorite designs. This year, a total of 757 entries from schools across the District were submitted.
The top three winners from each county have their winning designs displayed on billboards within their respective counties.
Winning designs from Ottawa County include the following students and their schools:
        • Kinsley Hofelich – Genoa Elementary School.
        • Charlotte Riedl – Danbury Local School District.
        • Olivia Keeton – Bataan Memorial Intermediate School.
Riedl’s billboard design is installed on SR 269 north of SR 2. Hofelich’s billboard design is installed on SR 51 west of Main Street, Genoa. Keeton’s design is installed on SR 163 west of SR 53.
All of the winners, along with their respective schools, will receive replica mini billboards featuring the students’ artwork. Additionally, students will receive “no waste lunch” supplies, further emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in their daily lives.

WATER Grant awarded to Lake High School
The Northwestern Water and Sewer District (The District) recently awarded grant funding to Lake High School to support educational programs focused on water resources.
The Water And Environment Teacher Education Resources (WATER) Grants aim to assist local schools by providing direct funding to educators, enabling them to teach about the vital importance of water conservation and environmental stewardship.
This year, The District will allocate more than $9,000 to local schools within its service area for water-focused educational initiatives. These programs will teach students about water quality, sustainability and responsible water usage.
As part of this initiative, District Board Member Brooke Hahn  presented a $500 WATER Grant to Lake High School teacher Tom Mahas.
Over the past several years, Lake biology students have been testing the water quality along a local creek. The grant will be used to purchase plants along the tested stream bank to improve the waterway and return the stream to a biodiverse environment.
The District introduces the grant program in December 2014, with the goal of giving back to the schools and communities it serves and fostering educational awareness about water resources and environmental sustainability.
