Fassett wins tourney championship

Fassett Junior High’s seventh grade girls basketball team finished the regular season 7-2 and then went on to win the Three Rivers Athletic Conference tournament championship.

The team is coached by Joseph Kiss and Brandon Roberts. The Lady Eagles finished the regular season with a league record of 2-2 earning them the third seed in the league tournament.

“The ladies were focused and ready to avenge their losses in a segment of their season very appropriately named the ‘Revenge Tour,’ Kiss said. “The ladies would start their ‘tour’ on the road with the second seeded Washington Panthers in the league semifinal. After a 32-25 victory, it was now time to prepare for the only other team that granted the Eagles a loss on their season, the Fremont Ross Little Giants.”

The Lady Eagles left Fassett Junior High School with a police escort through the city of Oregon, their destination — Fremont Middle School.

“The ladies dominated the championship game from start to finish, truly playing as a team. The ladies would upset the first seeded Fremont Little Giants, on their home floor, 50-25, making them the very first seventh grade girls basketball team to win the league championship since the merger of the junior highs back in 2012,” Kiss continued.

“The 2020-2021 school year has been filled with challenges, frustrations, and adversities. The constant challenges, frustrations, and adverse situations did not stop our seventh grade girls basketball team however,” Kiss continued. “This group of young ladies continued to fight and persevere through a season that many thought would not happen, a season that was put on hold in Lucas County while others continued to practice, play and compete. This group of girls continued to stay mentally tough and focused on their goal through it all, not backing down or becoming intimidated by anything that got in their way.

“This team of nine started preparing for the championship game on their very first day of practice without even realizing it. They came to practice every day hungry and eager to learn, hone in on their skills, and get better. They regularly brought great attitudes, a tremendous amount of effort, and tons of positive energy. These are all traits of champions, not just on the playing surface, but more importantly, off as well.

“The entire Fassett Junior High community is very proud of this group of young ladies. They truly are leaders on and off the playing surface. The future is bright for the class of 2026.”
