Family briefs: Genoa Kiwanis to present Halloween Costume Contest

        Genoa Area Kiwanis will present a Halloween Costume Contest Monday, Oct. 24 on Main Street in the village. In the event of rain, the event will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St.
        Participants should arrive at 6:30 p.m. Judging will begin at 7 p.m.
        Costume categories include Ugliest, Prettiest, Storybook, Huggable, Nursery Rhyme, Television and Creative Original.
        Judging categories include Preschool Age 1-2; Preschool Age 3-4; Kindergarten and Age 5; First Grade; Second Grade; Third Grade, Fourth Grade, Fifth and Sixth Grades and High School Band.
        Judges are partial to homemade costumes versus store-bought ones.
 
Senior Center Fall Ball
        Oregon Senior Center’s Fall Ball featuring the cool sounds of Bob Wurst will be held Friday, Oct. 21 from 6-11 p.m. at United Steelworkers Local 1-346, 2910 Consaul St., Toledo.
        Tickets are on sale now and cost $20 per person and $35 per couple for members and $25 per person and $45 per couple for nonmembers. Admission includes dinner, dessert and two drink tickets (beer and wine included), snacks, a night of dancing and a chance to win a door prize. The event will also include a photo booth, a 50/50 drawing and a pumpkin contest (application for contest entries due by Tuesday, Oct. 18; call 419-698-7078 for details).

Parkcliffe Trunk-or-Treat      
        Parkcliffe Community at Northwood will present a Trunk-or-Treat event for children Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 p.m., 3065 E. Plaza Blvd., Northwood.
        The evening will include games, snacks and trick-or-treating. Register by emailing at tori@parkcliffe.com.
 
St. John’s UCC Trunk-or-Treat
        St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, will host a Trunk-or-Treat Saturday, Oct. 29 from 4-6 p.m.
        The event is free and open to the public. Please dress in costume. Children must be accompanied by an adult.          Two contests will be held during the event – Best Dressed Trunk and Best Soup Maker. Free samples of homemade soup made by parishioners will be served.
 
Trick-or-Trunk event
        Unity United Methodist Church, 1910 E. Broadway, Northwood, will present a Trick-or-Trunk Sunday, Oct. 30 from 4-6 p.m.
        The event will include safe trick-or-treating, hot dogs, chips, cupcakes, drinks and games in Social Hall.
 
Historical society program
        Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society will present a program Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. featuring a presentation by a representative and descendant of the Ames family, one of Oregon-Jerusalem Township’s first families.
        The Ames descendants include many familiar community names including the Bench Family. The society will honor the Bench Family of Route 2 that evening for being third- and fourth-generation entrepreneurs in the community.
        The program will begin with coffee and refreshments. Reservations are not necessary but requested by calling Kitty at 419-376-9491.
 
 
Adopt America Network Home for Good Gala
        Adopt America Network invites the community to attend their annual foster adoption fundraiser – the Home for Good Gala –Saturday, Nov. 5 at Parkway Place, 2592 Parkway Plaza, Maumee.
        Funds raised from the event help find loving homes for children in foster care who are school-aged or older, minorities, sibling groups, or have medical or mental health challenges.
        A reception with passed hors d’oeuvres will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a short program, sit-down dinner, and silent auction.
        “Once a year, our community comes together to raise the money Adopt America needs to help our kids find families,” said Adopt America Network president, Wendy Spoerl. “Nothing is more important than a safe, loving place to grow up, and we rely on the wonderful people of Toledo and Northwest Ohio to help us see that every child has a home.”
