Edward C. LaBounty

Edward C. LaBounty, 76, of Graytown, OH died Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family while under Hospice Care. He was born December 12, 1947 in Oregon, OH to the late Theodore “Ted” and Mildred (Buehrer) LaBounty. Ed was a 1965 graduate of Clay High School and attended Stautzenberger Business College.
Ed developed a love for music at a young age, while listening to his mother play the organ for Sunday Church Services. She taught him how to play the organ. He took drum lessons and was a member of the percussion section of the Clay High School Marching Band. At age 17, he gave drum lessons at Grinnel’s Music Shop in Northwood, OH. He and several of his music-minded friends formed a band and named it “The Countdowns”. They were quite successful and traveled in the Toledo Area playing gigs. Ed played the drums and organ and was also a vocalist in the band. Several years later, when Ed got married, he sold the organ to buy furniture for his home!
Following college, he became a licensed agent for Western and Southern Insurance Company in 1969. In the mid-1980’s, Ed left the insurance business and began his lifelong career as a Lake Erie Fishing Guide. Ed first worked on the “Jehovah Gyra” headboat, then with Steve Burr on the “BR Pleasure”. He then became a first mate for Charlie Stange on the “Aquaholic”, then for “Pirate Sportfishing” and Keith Poland. Ed’s most recent employer was “Sea Breeze Charters” out of Wild Wings Marina in Oak Harbor. During the nearly 40 years of chartering fishing expeditions on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, Ed developed many lifelong friendships, as his customers repeatedly booked their trips with their favorite Captain Eddie. One of Ed’s most exciting fishing methods was ice fishing on Lake Erie, with his good friend Joe, aboard Joe’s airboat!
If Ed wasn’t fishing, he could be found as a guide hunting ducks in a layout boat on the Sandusky Bay or in Jerusalem Township with his loyal friend Kevin. Deer hunting throughout central and southern Ohio with his good friends Dan and Bill, son Eddie and cousins Ray and Richard became a yearly event. In late Autumn you would find Ed at the Pelee Island Pheasant Hunt, a yearly hunting tradition with friends, Eddie, and his beloved labrador retrievers “Jig” and “Lady”. Locally, Ed was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Wolf Creek Sports Club, Lake Erie Charter Captains Association and the Ottawa County Conservation Club.
When Ed was 64, he met Judy Adams, and the two divorcees fell head over heels in love! Their lives were filled with fishing adventures on three Great Lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Okeechobee, and the Gulf of Mexico. They purchased a travel trailer, loaded up their gear and 2 excited dogs, and headed to Florida for several months of RR&F (rest, relaxation, and fishing). When Ed became to ill to travel, they relished those memories made in Florida.
Survivors include Judy Adams of Graytown, OH; children: Ed (Hope) LaBounty of Graytown, OH and Michelle (Corey) Hammond of Oak Harbor, OH; grandchildren: Kelsie, Chase, and Caylee; sister Shirley Mulinix; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8pm at Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Oak Harbor Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 11am on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10am. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery, Perrysburg, OH. Memorial Contributions may be made to Cherry Street Mission, Helping Hands of St. Louis Church, Wolf Creek Sportsman’s Club, Ohio Living Hospice or Ottawa County Conservation Club.
