Calender of events: Zoo’s ‘Music under the Stars’ concert series kicks off July 7

        It’s a summer tradition – warm summer Sunday evenings, sitting in the Toledo Zoo’s historic Amphitheatre, popcorn in hand, surrounded by live music – and an entire animal kingdom.
        The Zoo’s Music under the Stars – a free concert series kicks off July 7 with a performance by the Fostoria Community Band.
        This year, the Zoo will highlight the many musical talents found in community bands throughout the region. The series schedule includes:
        July 14 – Maumee Community Band;
        July 21 – Genoa American Legion Band;
        July 28 – CedarCreek Church, as part of Christmas in July;
        Aug 4 – Cakewalkin’ Jass Band;
        Aug 11 – Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra, supported by Taylor Automotive Family.
        Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be emceed by 13abc anchor Tony Geftos.
        Concessions, including local craft beer on draft, pretzels, pizza, caramel corn, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream novelties and more will be available for purchase.
        The Amphitheatre will open at 6:30 p.m. Zoo parking rates and policies apply. Zoo admission does not apply, as concerts happen after Zoo hours.

Through Sept. 15: “Life is a Highway: Art and American Car Culture,” Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo. The first large-scale domestic exhibition to provide a historical overview of this topic with an emphasis upon the Midwest. This is a ticketed exhibition; free admission Thursdays 5-9 p.m. www.toledomuseum.org.
Through Oct. 6: Special exhibit “Demon Rum & Cold Water: The Two Sides of Temperance,” Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, Spiegel Grove, Fremont. Before Prohibition, there was temperance. In reaction to increasing consumption of alcohol in the 1800s, many people began to express concerns about the social effects of drinking. The Temperance Movement gained popularity in the 1850s and became a significant moral and political force by 1900. This exhibit will present the causes for temperance, the role of its proponents in American society, and how the Hayeses were shaped by and helped shape the movement. Through March 8, 2020: “Global Conversation: Art in Dialogue,” Toledo Museum of Art. Dozens of contemporary works of art, many from the Museum’s permanent collection and many newly acquired, that encompass a broad range of media and geographic regions are featured.
