An added benefit to having a black cat is they are alot less visible to predators. If you live in the cuts like us a black cat is a purr-fect match. - Tara L. Schelhorn

While reading this article I thought of this story: I am a black cat with white on my chest, my sister was black all over. One day a man came and caught us at the shed we were living at. We came in a loud van to a place we could hear dogs barking and cats meowing. then the man dropped our cages on a table and left.A woman in a white coat looked at me and opened my mouth and took my blood and other things, then she put me in a cage next to the table. She picked my sister, shook her head and took her away.

I never saw my sister again. - person

Black Cats

I have volunteered in many local shelters where ever I go and have worked as an employee in a couple of those. I have seen black cats put down as soon as being brought in. I find this more prevelent in Bible belt states curiously enough.

I'm the Phoenix Examiner and am looking for current statistics on adoption rates for black cats, the number of black cats adopted during October and the return rate, adoption rates for the rest of the year, and how many are put down in comparison to cats of other colors.

If someone can help me gather these facts it would be most appreciated.

On a personal note all my animals are rescues 2 dogs and 3 cats...one of them black. Panther we found has 6 toes on each foot and while independent for the most part insist on sleeping cuddled up with me every night without exception. She's beautiful and very well socialized with my other animals. I have always wondered at the prejudice against black cats. - laura roberts

People go by appearances too much

People who always choose a cat because of how they look are missing out on the most important part of the cat; their personality.

Though it's a good point about the difficulty of seeing expression on a dark haired face. I don't have a problem, but other people have admitted it to me. They are also much more difficult to photograph, as I am the owner of a gorgeous black cat... who looks better in person. - Pamela Merritt
