Genoa mayor, hockey enthusiasts, want to see ice

Ray St. John's 8-year-old son, R.J., plays hockey at Tam-O-Shanter in Sylvania four or five days a week, all year long.

At $2 a gallon, you can imagine the gas bill the St. John family accumulates going round trip - 64 miles - each day from its home in Curtice, near Anchor Point, to Tam-O-Shanter.

Jerusalem Township drops health insurance for employees

Jerusalem Township trustees voted 2-1 at a meeting March 24 to drop health insurance coverage and training costs for elected officials and full-time employees to cut expenses.

Trustees Rodney Graffis and Joe Gray voted to end health care coverage and out-of-town training expenses. Trustee Joe Kiss was opposed.

Ottawa County sees foreclosure rate increase

Home foreclosure filings last year increased in 62 of 88 Ohio counties and jumped by double digits in 27 counties, according to a review by Policy Matters Ohio of court records.

Lucas County ranked second behind Cuyahoga County in the number of filings per 1,000 population – 9.86 - or 4,359 filings among a population of 441,910.

Drainage issues raised on Wheeling Street project

As Oregon moves ahead with plans to widen Wheeling Street, some on council last week expressed concerns that it would contribute to drainage problems already in the area.

The city has installed temporary flow meters in the sanitary sewer system to help reduce or eliminate excessive storm water, or inflow and infiltration (I&I) from the wastewater collection system.

Oregon considers buying land for a new park

Oregon City Council on Monday will consider purchasing 15 acres of land off Pickle Road for $195,000 to make into a passive park.

The property is owned by George and Carrie Tschann, of 3521 Pickle Road.
