Two local farming families named “conservation pioneers”

•Bill and Betty Carstensen, Curtice farmers who have been advocates for conservation practices and tree planting. The reception took on added significance because of Mrs. Carstensen’s death just one week earlier. Mr. Carstensen is also deceased;
•Raymond and Thelma Zwyer, who worked to preserve farmland in Monclova;
•Neil and Beatrice Waterbury, self-taught naturalists whose advocacy was instrumental in the preservation of Oak Openings Preserve Metroparks as well as Lou Campbell Prairie and Irwin Prairie state nature preserves. The Waterbury’s are both deceased.

The reception included a tour of Blue Creek, which is operated jointly by Metroparks, Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District and Nature’s Nursery wildlife rehabilitation center. Part of the property is leased to the Village of Whitehouse for recreation.
