Dale Miekes, of Northwood, never fantasized about becoming a fireman as a young boy. Now, some 50 years later, Miekes has to restrain himself from answering the alarm.

“I was asked to join the department in 1963,” Miekes said with a chuckle. “They really needed the help and they said it would just be temporary. As a kid, it never entered my mind that I wanted to be a firefighter. Now, 50 years later, I am still helping them. I retired June 1 and when I hear the sirens, I still want to go.”

Allen-Clay Joint Fire District Chief Bruce Moritz revels in two major achievements he helped bring about during his term as president of the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association.

The first, which has been in the works for years, is the upcoming merger of a medical transportation board to oversee both private and public ambulance services. The other is the creation of an educational class that will guide the heads of departments.

A hearing will be held on Thursday in the Wood County Court of Common Pleas on Northwood’s efforts to get the owners of the Woodville Mall to tear down the dilapidated structure.

“The court has to decide that the mall is a nuisance, and that it’s a hazard to public health and safety,” said City Administrator Bob Anderson. “People are breaking in, there’s broken glass. It’s dangerous. We’re asking the court to grant us relief by ordering the owner to abate the nuisance. At this stage, it almost means demolishing it.”

Northwood City council on July 23 agreed to use storm water management funds to excavate a detention pond at the Greenway Estates subdivision near the Woodville Mall to improve drainage in the area.

The ordinance has two more readings before it becomes law.
