Asphalting of a reconstructed portion of Washington Street in the Village of Genoa has been put off until spring 2014.

Washington Street is being renovated from Sixth Street to Eighth Street. The $220,000 project undertaken by B Hill’z, Wayne, O., includes installation of storm sewers, gutters, curbs and new pavement. Crews are expected to work on the under drainage components along the street beginning next week.

Firing of Davis-Besse worker upheld

For the second time in a month, the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court ruling against an employee of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station who claimed he was wrongfully discharged and defamed by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., which operates the power plant.

A public meeting to discuss an income tax ballot issue to fund operations of the Gibsonburg Exempted Village School District is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Hilfiker Elementary School.

The meeting, planned to last one hour, will start at 7:30 p.m.

Voters on Nov. 5 will decide a 0.75 percent income tax that will, if passed, generate approximately $750,000 annually during its 5-year duration.

Even as local third-graders wrapped up their state reading tests last week, educators say some parts of the new initiative remain confusing.

The Third Grade Guarantee in full effect for the 2013-14 school year is part of the educational package put forward by Gov. John Kasich in the 2012 budget. The program is aimed at identifying kids who are falling behind in reading from kindergarten to third grade.
