An amendment that would end open lake dumping of dredged materials in Lake Erie has been approved by the Ohio Senate.

The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green) also re-appropriates about $1.6 million for conservation practices in the counties of the lake’s western basin.

Gardner last week said open lake dumping of dredged materials may be a factor in the formation of large algal blooms.

Mike Seferian cruised to victory on Tuesday in his quest to be re-elected to a second term as Oregon mayor.

Seferian, an independent, beat Council President Tom Susor, a Democrat, 54.98 percent to 45.02 percent, according to unofficial results from the Lucas County Board of Elections.

Landlords in Oak Harbor tired of paying delinquent utility bills for debtor renters are asking the village to raise its utility deposit fee.

Jess Burdine, a landlord in the village since 1974, was upset he had to pay a $271 electric bill on Monday for a tenant who had taken off after not paying him rental payments.

Burdine told village council at its Monday meeting that the bill had been $371 but that village officials in the utilities office had subtracted the $100 deposit to come up with the final sum.

Louis Fahrbach may have made history after being elected to Northwood City Council on Tuesday.

At just 22-years-old, Fahrbach appears to be the youngest person ever elected to council.

Fahrbach said his research with the Wood County Board of Elections shows that to be the case.

“I think I can bring a young, business mindset to the community,” said the Business Administration major at Tiffin University. “Hopefully, we can get some things changed.”

A bipartisan group of senators from states in the Great Lakes area is pressing for more action on preventing Asian carp from harming the ecosystem.

In a letter dated Nov. 6 to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the 16 senators asked the corps to quickly follow up on a study that is due to be soon completed with recommendations for addressing problems involving invasive species – notably the Asian carp.

The letter is signed by Ohio senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown and senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin from Michigan as well as those from Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Indiana.
