Clay High School Principal Jim Jurski notes that when schools like Ottawa-Glandorf and Napoleon travel for sports, they bring the entire town with them. In town, businesses paint their windows in school colors.

“Whenever you go to a small school, like Carey or Ottawa-Glandorf, and drive through that town, or I just drove through Woodville the other day, all the local business have ‘Go ‘Cats’ and they’ve got their flags flying out there,” Jurski said.

Texting and driving is a big “NO!”

Today more and more people rely on their cell phones. Additionally, the more that people become dependent on their phones, the more dangerous the roads get. Teens generally make excuses as to why they use their phones to text and drive such as, “It was important,” and “I had to text my mom.”

Details of the Urban Waters Initiative and priorities for improving water quality in the Western Lake Erie watershed will be discussed Nov. 19 at the Maumee Branch Library.

Cheryl Rice, of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, said the meeting is open to anyone with an interest in restoring urban waters.

The meeting will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is located at 501 River Road.

An amendment that would end open lake dumping of dredged materials in Lake Erie has been approved by the Ohio Senate.

The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green) also re-appropriates about $1.6 million for conservation practices in the counties of the lake’s western basin.

Gardner last week said open lake dumping of dredged materials may be a factor in the formation of large algal blooms.

Mike Seferian cruised to victory on Tuesday in his quest to be re-elected to a second term as Oregon mayor.

Seferian, an independent, beat Council President Tom Susor, a Democrat, 54.98 percent to 45.02 percent, according to unofficial results from the Lucas County Board of Elections.
