It was a time for reflection and celebration on Saturday, April 8 when the East Toledo Family Center held its 20th annual gala.

What started as a simple dinner turned into the center’s annual major fundraising event, which has raised nearly $500,000 over the years. This year’s event, led by chairpersons Dick and Sandy Fisher, had a crowd of nearly 250 people who support the agency.

The theme this year was “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” and was selected as a way to celebrate the past 20 galas that have been held. Pictures from past years were shared on all the guest tables and the various themes were also highlighted. Food was provided by Michael’s Gourmet Catering and the attendees say desserts were a crowd favorite. The dance floor was filled as the Late Show band played music until the party ended.

Oregon City Council approved the construction of sidewalks near the intersection of Isaac Streets Drive and Dustin Road to improve safety with an eye towards the development of a downtown area.
Plans call for the construction of five foot wide sidewalks on the east side of Isaac Streets Drive and on the north side of Dustin Road at a cost of $36,400.
The specific location is to the west of Kmart on Isaac Streets Drive and to the south side of Kmart on Dustin Road, said Mayor Mike Seferian.
City Administrator Mike Beazley said construction of the sidewalks is consistent with recent discussions about an overlay zoning district that covers three areas bordered by Isaac Streets Drive, Navarre Avenue, Coy Road, Dustin Road, and Pickle Road in a 167 acre area as part of the future development of a downtown area.

Northwood City Council next Thursday will consider awarding a bid to a contractor to demolish and abate buildings at the former Woodville Mall.
Mayor Ed Schimmel and City Administrator Bob Anderson will recommend to council that the bid be awarded to Midwest Environmental Inc., for $1,947,000 to demolish and abate three remaining buildings at the mall: Tireman, Elder Beerman, and The Andersons.
Included in the bid is the cost to remove asbestos from the buildings, according to Anderson.
Ten contractors submitted bids, which were opened on Feb. 20 in council chambers, for the project. Anderson said he will recommend that Midwest Environmental, of Perrysburg, be awarded the contract based on the recommendation of the city’s service committee.
Not everyone agrees with the recommendation.

If a preliminary injunction issued by Ottawa County Common Pleas Court Judge Bruce Winters against operators of a quarry in Benton Township remains in effect, it will put the City of Toledo in jeopardy of not meeting mandates set by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, attorneys for the quarry argue in filings last week with the Ohio Supreme Court.

They also contend Judge Winters’ granting of an injunction undermines “…the very statewide regulatory scheme created by the General Assembly, and implemented by the OEPA, to address how best to beneficially use Drinking Water Treatment Material (DWTM)  throughout the State of Ohio.”

A thin strip of grassy land between Wilber Street and Ardsley Road in the Village of Walbridge is poised to become a passive park with a walking path.

Already called Rehton Park on the village website, the land was the subject of a recent meeting of village council’s Parks, Recreation and Community Events Committee that included committee members as well as residents living near the strip of land.
