Oregon city council on Monday approved a $6,278,000 contract with Peterson Construction Company for Phase I of the wastewater treatment plant’s secondary improvement project.

“The purpose of this project is to deal with wet weather,” said Public Service Director Paul Roman.

As part of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, the city is required to increase the secondary treatment capacity of the wastewater treatment plant from 24 million gallons per day (MGD) to 36 MGD to eliminate secondary treatment bypasses and sanitary sewer collection overflows during wet weather.

The fourth man arrested in connection with a violent home burglary in Oak Harbor appeared in court for the first time this week.

Paul Thebeaux, 26, of Oak Harbor, appeared before Ottawa County Municipal Court Magistrate Lou Wargo on Monday to answer to three charges of aggravated burglary.

A court case involving a traffic stop on I-280 by Lake Township police appears headed to the Ohio Supreme Court.

Mark Hummer, township police chief, said Wednesday he’s conferred with the Wood County prosecutor’s office about the decision and a review by the Supreme Court will be sought.

Village leaders hope to have an engineering firm on board soon to concentrate on fixing Oak Harbor’s serious sewer overflow problems.

After weathering a number of missteps, village council fired its longtime engineer, Poggemeyer Design Group, of Bowling Green, earlier this fall. The pressure is on, however, to replace the firm by year’s end.

Pet owners buying licenses for their dogs have more options this year.

As part of the state’s biennial budget, House Bill 59 added two more categories to the license procedure which take affect Jan. 1, 2014. Instead of buying a single year’s license, the owners can choose between buying a three-year license or a permanent license, which lasts 10 years, Ottawa County Dog Warden JoLynn Hetrick said.

A single license costs $20 annually, a three-year is $60 and a permanent one runs $200.
