District 3 Councilman Peter J. Ujvagi says Toledo has lost $87 million over the last six years because of tax revenue the state no longer distributes to local government

In 2008, state government distributed to Toledo just under $25 million from local government funds, estate taxes and property tax disbursements. In 2016, that was closer to $8 million — a difference of $17 million.

After completing its second refinancing of debt incurred for school buildings, the Genoa school district is saving $760,750.

The school board recently completed the refinancing of its outstanding debt for the elementary school building by issuing new bonds at an interest rate of 2.62 percent over 21 years, according to Bill Nye, district treasurer.

The former interest rate was 4.78 percent, he said. The bonds being refinanced, in the amount of $4.37 million, were originally sold in 2009.  The refinancing was completed on Sept. 28.

A five-month undercover operation by the Ottawa County Drug Task Force has resulted in seven persons being indicted for trafficking and possession charges, Mark Mulligan, county prosecutor, said.

The county grand jury has issued indictments for:

• Jacob Kilpatrick, 20, Toledo, for one count of trafficking in heroin. The charge is a felony due to the grand jury specifying the alleged offense was committed in the vicinity of a juvenile.

• Fernando Gonzales, 26, Sandusky, for one count of trafficking in cocaine and one count each in complicity to trafficking in cocaine and heroin – all fifth degree felonies.

With an operating levy on the ballot for the third time this year, the financial condition of the Woodmore School District dominated the discussion at a forum held Tuesday by the school board.

Board members scheduled the forum, which drew about 35 people, to listen to the concerns residents may have about the district’s operations.

In response to the first question from resident Wayne Sandrock about the impact of the Current Agricultural Use Valuation program on the district’s property tax collections and an audit of the district being conducted by the state, Jaime Pearson, district treasurer, estimated the school system’s share of CAUV-generated tax revenues at about $88,000 this year.
