Deputies of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department have selected Dean Hammer as Deputy of the Year.

A luncheon and award presentation was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton.

A lifelong resident of Ottawa County, Deputy Hammer began his career with the department in November, 1995 after working with the Ottawa County Juvenile Court.

Officials in Wood and Ottawa counties have approved funding a study to determine if it’s viable to link their water distribution systems, which would provide Wood County’s Northwestern Water and Sewer District with another source for purchasing water.

Trustees of the Northwestern district and the Ottawa County commissioners Thursday approved funding the study.

The Oregon Police Department received a Stimulus Justice Assistance Grant of $107,917.

The money is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (AARA) of 2009, signed by President Barack Obama on February 17. The AARA will inject $787 billion into the economy, providing jobs and other resources for states and local communities.

Oregon City Council on Monday will consider approving a bid to buy 5,500 tons of road salt at a much cheaper rate per ton than what the city was charged last year.

Three bids were received, according to Public Service Director Paul Roman. The lowest and best bid was Cargill Inc., of North Olmstead, Ohio, at $46.88 per ton.

“The bid is through the City of Toledo,” Roman said at a committee of the whole meeting May 4. “It allows for Lucas County and the City of Oregon to purchase salt through the contract.”
