Friends of Lucas County Dogs in conjunction with the Lucas County Auditor’s Office, Lucas County Canine Care and Control and the Huntington Center have created a promotion to increase the number of dog licenses sold.

Dog owners who buy licenses are automatically entered to win tickets to concerts and events through May as part of the promotion.

The effort was initiated with the assistance of a generous community member, to increase the number of dogs licensed in Lucas County.

“A local citizen came to us wanting to donate towards the tickets to increase the licenses sold in the county,” said Tina Duckworth, vice president of the non-profit group Friends of Lucas County Dogs, which supplements the services of the Lucas County Canine Care & Control.

“We were able to purchase the tickets, partner with the auditor and the commissioners and do this promotion,” she said.

State Rep. Michael Sheehy (D. House District 46) recently expressed support for a congressional effort to stop the spread of Asian carp in the Great Lakes.

Sheehy, whose district includes Jerusalem Township, Oregon and parts of Toledo in The Press circulation area, introduced similar legislation in the House in 2014.

His support for the federal legislation comes after some members of Congress from both parties are calling on the Army Corps of Engineers to close an artificial connection between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes – a thoroughfare for the invasive carp to enter the Great Lakes basins.

CAFOs and CAUV figured prominently in the discussion Ohio Farmers Union delegates had during the organization’s recent annual convention.

To help avoid another harmful algae bloom in Lake Erie and other waterways, the OFU is proposing the Ohio Department of Agriculture prepare an accurate assessment of all livestock operations within each watershed in the state.

A resolution of support for a Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments study of a proposed regional water authority has been approved by the Lake Township trustees.

The trustees approved the resolution Tuesday after hearing a brief report from Mark Hummer, township administrator, of a TMACOG meeting he attended where the proposed water authority was discussed.

The Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals has upheld a judgment awarding a former CSX Transportation, Inc. employee $240,000 for injuries he sustained in 2010 while working at the Stanley Yard in Walbridge.

Jerome Shiple, who worked as a brakeman/conductor, filed a complaint in November 2013 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court that he injured his knee while boarding a locomotive from the east side of a departure track in the yard.
