In September of this year, Woodmore High School history teacher Courtney Reiner will be taking a trip to Washington D.C. to escort a veteran on an Honor Flight.

Reiner heard of someone in Woodville taking part in Honor Flight, and she decided that she, too, wanted to give back to the veterans.

Treasurer outlines B-C-S revenue loss

A report by Anne Arnold to the Benton-Carroll-Salem school board was not what board members wanted to hear.

With a 3.9-mill emergency operating levy on Tuesday’s ballot, the board is hoping to avoid closing two more elementary schools in addition to Rocky Ridge Elementary School, which will be closed at the end of the school year as part of a re-alignment of the district due to a drop in enrollment.

Area school district in Wood, Ottawa, and Sandusky counties will be on the ballot Tuesday with revenue requests.

In Wood County, the Eastwood Local School District is seeking renewal of a 1 percent, 5-year income tax issue.

The district recently announced plans to reduce the budget by $650,000 for the 2011-12 school year. The austerity plan includes laying off employees and reducing hours.

As the investigation into the murder/suicide of an Oak Harbor family focused on the question, why, authorities uncovered a tale of a marriage that had broken down well before it turned tragically fatal.

The case of the deaths of Alan and Dawn Atwater and their three children remains under investigation, but a report released last week by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department paints a picture of desperation: Alan, 31, telling friends and family he wanted to keep the marriage intact but asking a younger man to sleep with his wife; Dawn, 30, looking to end the marriage to a domineering man who loved their children and confiding to friends he had been abusive to her.

Officials in the Village of Woodville say they’ll look first to enacting spending cuts in the police department if a 7.4-mill property tax levy on Tuesday’s ballot isn’t renewed.

The levy generates about $332,519 annually and is the major source of funds for the village’s general fund, according to Barb Runion, village clerk-treasurer, and costs the owner of a home with an appraised value of $100,000 about $259 a year.
