Amidst roughly 800 people, Cardinal Stritch High School celebrated an important milestone last Thursday, commemorating its 50th year in existence as an educational institution in addition to celebrating the first anniversary of Kateri Catholic Academy.

The 10 a.m. Mass was led by Bishop Leonard P. Blair at the school gymnasium to commemorate the event, and remarks were made by President Eric Schild who spoke about the school, its accomplishments and its vision for the future. Entertainment was also provided by Reverend Jeff McBeth and people were given a tour of the facilities when the event commenced, just before lunch was served.

March 3 is the day that changed the life of Ellen Jean Mix forever.

Ellen had called 9-1-1 three times that morning, desperately trying to get EMS for her husband, Tim, who was having breathing problems at their Parc Rue home in Northwood. By the time help arrived 28 minutes later, Tim had stopped breathing. He was removed from life support two days later in the hospital as a result of brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen.

The Oregon school board last Tuesday eliminated eight classified positions as part of the closure of Wynn Elementary School.

Those positions include a school nurse, cafeteria employees, and a playground monitor.

Under a proposed consent agreement with the Ohio Attorney General and Environmental Protection Agency, CSX Transportation, Inc. will pay $350,000 in civil penalties and related costs for spills into Cedar Creek in Lake Township and in other Ohio waterways.

Arcadis U.S., Inc., which was contracted by CSX for cleaning up after two train accidents, was charged with causing discharges into the Cuyahoga River,  and will pay a civil penalty of $60,000.

The Genoa School District has begun a wave of extensive spending cuts, including the loss of one teacher this year and a custodian next year.

And one of the biggest changes families will have to endure is a new charge for all-day, everyday kindergarten beginning in fiscal year 2013. Parents of kindergarteners will have to fork out $100 per month beginning that school year for students to attend all day classes.
