B-C-S board bids farewell to retiring staff
The Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education recently recognized retiring staff members who had a combined 381 years of experience.

Superintendent Diane Kershaw presented certificates and school bells to Judy Jensen, Sue Kaiser, Sue Glass, Diane Wise, Dorothy Grau, Joan Hurrell, Sue Hoffman, Gail Whitman, Vicki Barman, and Louis Damschroder. Deb Harbal, Carroll Mylander, and Sue Mesker are also retiring but weren’t at the meeting.

The next regular school board meeting will be June 28 at 6 p.m.

The Press has learned that Dr. David Miramontes, Northwood’s EMS medical director for nearly 10 years, wrote a letter to Mayor Mark Stoner on April 16 in which he made 14 recommendations for adequate staffing, supervision and deployment of resources in the fire department.

The letter was written following the death of resident Tim Mix, who had waited 28 minutes for a rescue squad to arrive at his home on Parc Rue after his wife called 9-1-1 three times on the morning of March 3.

In “Triumph Over Tragedy” and to remember those who lost their lives in the tornado that devastated the area last year, a block party being planned for June 4 at 4 p.m. on Main Street in Millbury.
  
A committee consisting of members of the Lake Township police and fire departments, Millbury Mayor Mike Timmons and community members is in the process of planning the event, which will include an evening of fun, food and entertainment.
 
The festivities will be held on Main Street just south of Ayers Road to Cherry Street. The street will be closed to through traffic, except for residents and emergency vehicles.

A freeze on rates for FirstEnergy all-electric customers has been extended to March 31, 2013, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has announced.

After the two-year freeze, the utility will reduce a portion of the discounted rates annually through 2018.

The PUCO last week said its action gives FirstEnergy electric heating customers time to prepare for increased rates.

In this issue, Press reporters look back at the June 5, 2010 tornado that devastated parts of Lake Township and western Ottawa County. The storm killed seven, destroyed Lake High School and the Lake Township administration building, as well as a number of homes and other structures.

The past year has been marked by progress. The township building has been rebuilt and an open house/dedication ceremony is scheduled for June 5.
