As part of the yearlong celebration of 150 years of service to youth and elderly in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, Lutheran Homes Society (LHS) held a site celebration June 21 for residents and employees of Lutheran Home at Toledo.

The Toledo campus, located at 131 N. Wheeling Street, is Lutheran Homes Society’s original ministry for elderly. The event featured a “Museum in a Suitcase” presentation by the Rev. Gerald Labuhn, LHS Executive Director Emeritus and Archivist. Pastor Labuhn has served LHS in various capacities for 60 years.

The Little Sisters of the Poor – Sacred Heart Home in Oregon was recognized by the State of Ohio June 21, in honor of the 125th anniversary of the Little Sisters serving the elderly poor at the Sacred Heart Home.

Sr. Ceclia Mary and Sr. Margaret traveled to the State House in Columbus, where Ohio State University President G. Gordon Gee made an introduction for the Sisters on the floor of the Senate.

Three Toledo Mud Hens players joined in the fun Sunday, June 12, participating in the annual Miracle League of Northwest Ohio All-Star game. The game closed out the league’s spring season.

Pitchers Robbie Weinhardt and Thad Weber and outfielder Deik Scram attended the event at Brentwood Park in Northwood to sign autographs, play a little baseball and bring a lot of smiles.

In an article in the May 23 issue of The Press, it reported that Dorothy Gackstetter was recognized as the first recipient of the Community Service Senior Hall of Fame award for her contributions to county senior programs.

Among her cited contributions was designing and creating three Elliston, Ohio signs to recognize the achievements of American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox. The sign project was a collaboration with local artist Bob Poiry.

 

Seventy-four-year-old Oregon resident Joe Wyatt was preparing his 32-foot Allegro recreational vehicle for a cross country trip when he took a sharp blow to his head.

Two 13-year-old boys, Brock Belinske and Chase Bodeman, were passing by and came to Wyatt’s rescue.

“They were the nicest kids,” said 72-year old Fran Wyatt, Joe’s wife.
