Last Monday morning, Barbara Locker, of Eastpointe, couldn’t help noticing the ruckus her dog was making in one corner of her yard.
“He was back there barking, and I saw a female duck pacing back and forth on the other side or our fence, just carrying on terribly,” said Locker, who has lived in her Eastpointe home with her husband for 18 years.
Ducks like to hang out in her neighbor’s pool on occasion, she said.
The East Toledo Club will host its 76th annual flag raising ceremony Monday, Memorial Day, 7:30 am at the flagpole at Pearson Park.
The Color Guard and Rifle Squad from Christ Dunberger Post 537 will raise the flag. Taps will be played followed by a short prayer. Breakfast at the Macomber Lodge will follow.
Douglas J. Kigar, former United States Army Specialist 4th Class Medic and a 1969 graduate of Waite High School, will speak. Kigar served from 1970 to 1976. The public is invited.
A fund-raising drive for a memorial at the Allen Township starts this week, organizers said.
The memorial for township fire fighters and military veterans will be built in an addition to the township cemetery.
Details of the fund-raising effort will be announced May 25 during a Memorial Day service that starts at 11 a.m., said Dan Helle, one of the organizers.
For the second time in two months police have made a major marijuana bust in Lake Township.
A township officer Tuesday stopped a pick-up truck about 5:45 p.m. on U.S. 20 near Luckey Road for not having a front license plate. The officer noticed a smell of marijuana from the bed of the truck and called for the department’s K-9 unit.
Police Chief Mark Hummer Wednesday said about 250 one-pound bags of marijuana were found in the truck. They had been stored in five containers.
