As the result of an auction last month to provide electricity to FirstEnergy customers at reduced electric rates, residents and small businesses will see lower electric bills beginning this month.

“The rates really came in substantially less than what was expected,” Paul Goldberg, Oregon’s law director, said at Oregon City Council’s committee of the whole meeting last Monday. Goldberg is the city’s representative on the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition (NOAC), a group of communities that buy power in bulk to reduce costs.

The goal of superintendents of the Eastwood, Genoa, Woodmore, Lake, and Otsego districts is to form an  eight-school league that will include Rossford, says Brent Welker, Eastwood superintendent, in his weekly newsletter.

After Lakota announced its intent to leave the Suburban Lakes League and join the Midland Athletic League in the 2009-10 season, superintendents from Genoa, Otsego, Lake, Woodmore, and Eastwood voted in favor of admitting Rossford to the SLL while those from Elmwood and Gibsonburg voted against.

The Community-Care-Van is gassed up and ready to go for another year, thanks to a generous donation from United Way of Greater Toledo.

Oregon Mayor Marge Brown said she was "elated" when she opened a letter from United Way on May 26. The letter stated that the organization was donating $30,000 toward the operation of the Community-Care-Van.

"It is such a blessing," Brown said, "because it helps the quality of life for the individuals in this entire area. God works in mysterious ways."

Randy Hill knew he wanted to get into law enforcement in the late 1980s.  Seven months ago, he was named Genoa’s police chief and in that time has made himself at home. He has met many of the residents, increased officer training, and implemented more efficient departmental policies.

With spring comes the urge to clean out closets and basements and make some extra cash with a garage or yard sale. For some, the sales can be very profitable and fun but sellers are being warned to look at the money they are accepting for their unwanted items.

According to Detective Sgt. Tim Zale of the Oregon Police Department (OPD), the bureau has taken four reports of counterfeit bills over a two-weekend period.
