Oregon is working to cut costs of building a new senior center, estimated last year to cost $5.3 million.
 
The Area Office on Aging has committed $1 million when plans are finalized, Mayor Marge Brown said at a council meeting March 23.
 
Administrator Ken Filipiak is working to cut costs “so its halfway reasonable,” said Brown.
 
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” she said.

Toledo City Council last Tuesday voted 6-3 against issuing a special use permit for a proposed convenience store at 2346 Seaman Road.
 
Third District Councilman Mike Craig, whose district encompasses East Toledo, voted in favor of the special use permit. Craig, who had appeared at a press conference with Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on February 16 to express opposition to the store, had changed his mind and voted for the special use permit. He did not return a message to The Press for comment.
 
Council members who voted against the permit were Wilma Brown (District 1), D. Michael Collins (District 2), George Sarantou, Joe McNamara (At-Large), Frank Szollosi, (At-Large), and Michael Ashford (District 4).

The Ottawa County Transit Board plans to hire a design firm within a month to make plans for a new vehicle storage facility that is receiving federal stimulus funding.
 
Bill Lowe, director of the Ottawa County Transportation Agency, said contract bids for the 27,500-square-foot facility could be opened by September or October.
 
He said design plans will cost about $350,000 and construction will be about $3.5 million.

Low levels of contamination were found in monitoring wells the city installed last year in the right-of-way of the Envirosafe Services of Ohio, Inc., landfill, according to a final report issued by ARCADIS.

ARCADIS, Oregon’s consulting engineer, installed four monitoring wells to determine if harmful substances in Envirosafe’s historic landfills migrated off-site into the right-of-way along York Street, Old Millard Avenue and Otter Creek Road.
