Kelly J. Kaczala, news editor at The Press Newspapers, and Melissa A. Burden, freelance reporter, last week won an Excellence in Journalism award from The Press Club of Toledo in the nondaily category for a story about a Northwood man who had stopped breathing on March 3 waiting 28 minutes for a rescue squad to arrive, despite three calls made by his wife to 9-1-1. He later died at a hospital after suffering brain damage from a lack of oxygen.

Judges called their reporting “the very essence of journalism.”

The award was presented at the 13th annual Touchstone Awards that honored community service and excellence in journalism on Oct. 6 at the Toledo Club.

Only a handful of schools recognize high school equestrian teams as club activities, but the Lake team is making a mark anyways.

Last year, an eight-member Lake equestrian team won an Ohio Interscholastic Horsemanship Association Division 2 state championship at Vail Meadows in Oregon. Coach Connie Workman’s team took first place by scoring 98 points to outdistance Anthony Wayne (89 points) and Tinora.

Back in 2009 the Genoa football team decided that they wanted to show support for victims and survivors of breast cancer and draw attention to this disease during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They did this by wearing pink gloves, armbands and athletic tape on their wrists and ankles. The team will continue this tradition Oct. 28 in their game against Eastwood at Comet Stadium.

It was when aspiring small business owners Rod and Donna McHaffie were seriously praying on opening a religious bookstore in Genoa this past summer that a symbolic miracle occurred.

It was in the guise of another Genoa businessman opening up his heart.

Genoa village officials are working steadily to alleviate future flooding problems as the community enters the fourth phase of a six-phase sewer upgrade.

That’s the message village council recently offered two Buckeye Street residents who complained September rains caused some major problems.

Female coach

The Buffalo Bills last week hired the NFL's first female full-time coach (Kathryn Smith--special teams quality control coach). Should there be more women in coaching?
