Oregon City Council on Monday approved an agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Company for preliminary engineering services for the Cedar Point Road relocation project.

“It’s an agreement with Norfolk Southern for them to proceed with the city’s design as well as their costs for engineering,” said Oregon Public Service Director Paul Roman.

A rural Oak Harbor man accused of inducing panic with bomb threats to area schools, including two in Oak Harbor, remains in custody on a $250,000 bond.

Charles Tingler, 22, of North Leutz Road, Salem Township was returned to the Ottawa County Detention Facility following his initial appearance Monday in Ottawa County Municipal Court. He will be assigned a court appointed attorney and return for arraignment at 3 p.m. May 5, a court employee said.

For his latest volunteer efforts in Africa, Ron Overmyer was rewarded generously with a live chicken and a bowl full of sweet potatoes.

The gifts were from members of the Samora Machel Farmer Association who primarily grow white corn and soybeans on farms averaging five to eight acres in a highland area at the eastern base of the Bvumba Mountains.

Overmyer, of Oak Harbor, last month completed his third trip to Africa for the Farmer-to-Farmer program administered by the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs, working with growers who live near the town of Catandica in west central Mozambique.

A lawyer for Planet Aid, a non-profit group that collects clothing and shoes in recycling drop boxes across the country, has asked the City of Northwood to reconsider the removal of the boxes or it could face litigation.

The city last year mailed letters to the owners of the collection boxes, as well as to the owners of properties where the boxes are located, to inform them they are in violation of the zoning code. The bins, described by Northwood as “accessory structures,” are not permitted by the Central Business District Zoning Code.

Kenn Kaufman, an internationally renowned bird expert and a resident of Oak Harbor, worked as a consultant on the film A Birder’s Guide to Everything. The movie, which stars Ben Kingsley and James LeGros, is a coming-of-age comedy built around birding. It details a 15-year-old boy (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) who embarks on a road trip with friends to try to document a possible sighting of a bird believed to be extinct.
